Buying a Powerscreen crusher, especially a cone crusher, isn't really just about the machine. You're also buying the distributor who supports it: parts, service, warranty, documentation, and logistics. I'm the office administrator for a mid-sized construction materials company, and I manage equipment and parts ordering—roughly $2 million a year across eight vendors—and report to both operations and finance. I'd rather spend ten minutes on these basics than deal with mismatched expectations later.
Checkpoints: What material are you crushing? What feed size is coming in and what product size do you need? Is this primary, secondary, or tertiary work? And give the throughput requirement as a range, not a single number.
Step 2: Verify the distributor's OEM authorization
An authorized distributor for a Powerscreen crusher should be able to show that they are an official dealer for the brand. By OEM, I mean the original equipment manufacturer—the company that designed and built the machine—not a reseller or a parts brand. We use Powerscreen of Washington, but I didn't just take that on faith. I asked for confirmation, and I checked the brand's own dealer locator.
If you are considering a reseller that isn't an authorized distributor, you might get a better price. But you are also outside the OEM support system. This is the step people skip because it's not exciting. But the most important question isn't how much the crusher costs. It's what happens when the cone liner wears out.
I don't have hard data on how often parts shortages cause downtime across the industry. Roughly speaking, from our own orders, lead times are almost always longer than the first estimate. Per FTC advertising guidance (ftc.gov), claims have to be truthful and substantiated. In practice, that means a distributor should be able to back up a statement like 'fully compliant' with a certificate from the engine manufacturer. If you get a verbal confirmation, ask for the document.
In my first year in purchasing, a verbal promise about compliance documentation delayed a permit by almost two weeks. Now I request every compliance paper before the order is finalized.

Step 6: Plan the actual site logistics
Here's the step almost everyone forgets until the machine arrives. A mobile cone crusher has specific transport dimensions, height, weight, and turning radius. It doesn't just show up.
The distributor isn't being difficult when they ask for site access details. They're being smart. We once measured a gate opening and realized the crusher would need a temporary ramp and a different route. That added a day to installation, and it would have been worse if we hadn't checked.
Ask the distributor to walk through the site layout with you. Ask about overhead power lines, road weight limits, and turning radius. And plan where the screener, trommel, stacker, and power supply will sit. Cone crushers don't work in isolation.
Checkpoints: Access route width, height, weight limit, and turning radius. Installation clearance for cranes, gensets, and conveyors. Operator access to the control platform and maintenance points. And storage space for spare wear parts on site.
Common mistakes worth avoiding
A few things I've added to my own vendor review process:
- Don't buy on machine specs alone. The distributor's support network affects uptime more than peak tonnage numbers.
- Don't treat OEM and aftermarket as an either/or choice. Some aftermarket parts are fine, but for critical cone crusher components, know what you're trading for a lower price.
- Don't assume lead time equals ready to crush. Ask whether commissioning, training, and site prep are included in the timeline.
- Don't let finance discover a documentation problem after the sale. Bring them into the loop before you order.
