Powerscreen Crusher Specs: 6 Checks Before an OEM vs Private Label Buy

I’ve been handling equipment purchasing for a family-owned crushed rock operation for eleven years. If you’re staring at two quotes — a genuine Powerscreen crusher versus a private label “equivalent,” or an OEM parts order versus a wholesale aftermarket quote — this piece is for you.

I’ve made and documented four significant buying mistakes in that time. All told, they cost roughly $168,000 of wasted budget. That number sits in our purchasing review file. It’s also why I keep a pre-buy checklist. This is that checklist.

One thing before we start: I’m not anti-private-label. We run private label wear parts on some machines and they earn their place. What actually hurt us wasn’t “cheap parts.” It was comparing specifications that were not comparable.

When this checklist applies

Use it when you have two spec sheets in front of you and need to judge whether they represent the same real-world machine:

  • You’re choosing between a Powerscreen crusher (new or dealer-used) and a private label machine offered at wholesale.
  • You’re buying crusher wear parts or spares and the quote says “compatible” instead of giving you a part number you can verify.
  • A capacity figure appears in a quote with no conditions attached.

Six checks, in order. The order matters, because each check builds on the one before it.

1. Anchor everything to the serial number and build year

The model name is not a specification. Spec sheets are tied to a build year, and heavy equipment changes meaningfully between years.

Take the Chieftain 1400 Powerscreen. It’s a long-running model in the Powerscreen lineup, and it has been sold with different feeder, conveyor, and option configurations depending on the year. Compare a machine built in the early 2010s with today’s product page and you are not comparing the same machine — even though the badge is identical.

Before looking at tonnage, price, or anything else, get three things:

  • Serial number
  • Build year
  • The specification or operator’s manual that matches that serial number

In 2016 I built a cost estimate for a used screening plant from a current brochure. The machine had a manual folding tail conveyor; the brochure showed a hydraulic one. Every move needed an extra crane and a couple of extra hours. We moved the plant four times that season, and each move cost somewhere in the range of $1,900 to $2,400 more than my estimate. I remember the total as roughly $8,400, though I might be misremembering the exact figure.

The seller wasn’t trying to deceive anyone. The brochure was simply for a newer year. That was my mistake, and it’s the reason serial number comes first on our checklist.

2. Ask what “capacity” means before you compare it

Crusher specifications are useless without the conditions behind them. Compare two machines at the same closed-side setting, with similar feed gradation, material type, moisture, and circuit configuration, and only then can you say one is faster.

It’s tempting to look at the headline number. If one quote says 300 tonnes per hour and another says 300 tonnes per hour, they look equal. But one might be rated at a 100 mm closed-side setting while the other is rated at a 150 mm setting. Those are different machines in practice.

Here’s what you need to ask for:

  • At what closed-side setting was the capacity measured?
  • What feed gradation, top size, and percentage of fines?
  • What material type and bulk density?
  • Was it in open or closed circuit?

A seller who can’t answer these questions hasn’t substantiated the claim. In the U.S., FTC guidance (ftc.gov) says advertising claims need substantiation, and that’s a useful filter: a number without conditions is marketing, not a specification.

I learned this one on a crusher purchase in 2020. The quoted capacity was fine — at a setting we never ran. At the setting our product required, the machine produced maybe 70% of the figure we used in our payback model. The result was a payback period about five months longer than we planned. That crusher wasn’t a bad machine. My comparison was bad.

3. Put the general arrangement drawings side by side

“Same feed height” is not the same as “fits under our feed hopper.”

When a vendor says the machine is equivalent, ask for the general arrangement drawing. Not a brochure dimension table — the drawing. Check feed height, operating width, side conveyor clearances, access for maintenance, and transport dimensions. A 400 mm difference in the wrong place can turn a $30,000 price gap into an $11,000 site modification bill.

That last number isn’t hypothetical. In Q1 2021, we approved a machine because the headline dimensions matched. The full drawing wasn’t checked. The feeder pan was longer than our existing drop-in chute could handle, and we had to cut and extend the hopper wing walls before commissioning. The modification cost $11,000 and added a week to the project. The drawing was available the whole time. I just didn’t ask for it.

Trust me on this one: if a seller won’t provide a general arrangement drawing, that’s a red flag regardless of whether the brand is OEM or private label.

4. For wear parts, compare drawings and certificates, not part numbers

The OEM versus private label decision gets most of its drama in the wear parts category, and that’s where I see the widest range of quality — in both directions.

When you get a quote for manganese wear parts, ask for three documents:

  • The OEM part number and drawing number it replaces
  • The dimensional drawing of the actual part offered
  • The material test certificate (alloy chemistry and hardness)

A reputable private label foundry can provide these without hesitation. If a seller can only say “compatible with Powerscreen” and can’t show you the drawing, you’re not comparing products — you’re comparing words.

In 2021, I approved a trial order of a cheaper liner set for one of our cone crushers. The invoice was about 24% below the OEM equivalent. The parts fit. But nobody checked the cross-sectional profile or the material certificate before installation. When I asked the supplier for the certificate afterward, it turned out the order had been packed without one, and getting it took three weeks. We never got clean cost-per-tonne data because the feed changed mid-trial, so the “saving” was never actually proven. Let me rephrase that: we didn’t save 24%. We spent 24% less on the invoice and bought a year of uncertainty.

If you’re buying crusher parts wholesale, add one more step at delivery: weigh and measure a sample before you install a full set. If the drawing says 1,100 kg and the crate weighs 980 kg, stop and ask why. Do this even for OEM orders — mistakes happen in every warehouse.

5. Put support and downtime into the same worksheet as the price

The cheapest quote has a way of becoming the most expensive purchase when support is missing.

For a mobile crusher or screener, downtime isn’t just a lost hour. It’s the loader that’s still being paid, the haul trucks that are still being paid, and the crew that’s still on site. At our operation, one unplanned day of crushing downtime costs us something in the ballpark of $9,000 to $12,000 once fixed costs are counted. Your number will be different, but you should know it before you compare price quotes.

So ask every supplier the same five questions:

  • Where is the nearest local stock of wear parts for this exact model?
  • What is the current lead time for a major failure part?
  • Who responds when the machine breaks down — and how fast?
  • Is the warranty parts only, or parts and labor?
  • Does the warranty cover damage to the crusher caused by a failed supplied part?

When I reviewed our recent purchase history, seven significant procurement decisions came up where we chose the lowest quoted price. In four of those cases, the total cost exceeded the middle quote once delays, rework, and emergency freight were counted. That’s not a reason to avoid the lowest bid; it’s a reason to calculate total cost instead of stopping at the invoice amount.

The value of an OEM dealer network isn’t that the brand name is nicer. It’s that parts and service are contractual, localized, and usually priced before you need them. If a private label supplier can match that on paper, they deserve a fair shot at the order. If they can’t, no discount makes up for a machine sitting idle for two weeks.

6. Verify compliance documentation before payment

This is the check that feels like bureaucracy until it stops your project.

Mobile crushing and screening equipment has engine emissions certification requirements in most markets. In North America that means EPA certification and the corresponding emissions label; in Europe it’s the CE marking and EU Stage requirements. You need the compliance documents that match the actual machine serial number and engine serial number — not a sample certificate from another unit.

If a seller says the paperwork will be sent “after delivery,” treat that as a red flag. We’ve made it a hard rule: no compliance paperwork, no scheduled start date. It doesn’t matter whether the machine is OEM or private label. The legal risk lands on the operation that runs the equipment, not on the seller who disappears after the wire transfer.

Three mistakes that still show up on our yard

Even with this checklist, I still catch myself cutting corners. The three that keep recurring are:

  • Comparing peak capacity numbers instead of the settings we will actually run.
  • Approving a “compatible” part without requesting the dimensional drawing.
  • Assuming paperwork will arrive on its own after a wholesale order.

The last one cost us a permitting delay in 2023, and I don’t want to repeat it.

Bottom line: a specification sheet you can’t verify is not a specification — it’s an idea. Whether the decision is a crusher OEM vs private label debate or a smaller wholesale parts order, do the six checks, put the assumptions in writing, and only then compare the price.

Take it from someone who paid the school fees: the point isn’t to always buy the expensive option. The point is to make sure you’re actually comparing the same machine before you decide which one is the better value.
